Lines, zones and the events they create

Draw counting lines and zones, choose directions and object types, and understand every event the app sends.

Lines: counting what crosses

A line counts objects that cross it. Use one for doors, gates, corridors and lanes.

  • Choose one or both directions; name each direction (for example In and Out) so reports read clearly.
  • On AI profiles, limit a line to people or to vehicles.
  • Draw it where objects are clear and large, with room to track them before and after the line, and away from the frame edge.
  • Tailgating: tick it on a line to flag two people crossing within about a second of each other. Best with an overhead camera.

Zones: what happens inside an area

A zone watches an area. If you only need a count across a line, do not add a zone as well: it adds nothing to the line count.

  • Every zone reports objects joining it and motion starting in it, with no settings needed.
  • Dwell: flags an object that stays longer than a time you set, in seconds. For loitering and long waits.
  • Crowd: flags when at least a number of objects you set stay in the zone for a time you set. For queues and overcrowding.

Speed lines

A speed line is a pair of lines a known distance apart. It measures speed and counts objects that take a particular path. See Speed and turning counts.

The events the app sends

Each event is one short text record. Most carry an object number and its class (person or vehicle type).

  • Line crossed: an object crossed a line, with its direction.
  • Tailgating: two objects crossed the same line within about a second.
  • Speed line crossed: an object crossed both lines of a speed line, with its speed.
  • Zone joined: an object entered a zone.
  • Motion started: activity began in a zone.
  • Object dwell: an object stayed in a zone past the dwell time.
  • Crowd appeared: enough objects stayed in a zone long enough. No object number, because it is about the zone.
  • Camera obstructed: the view was blocked, dazzled or moved. Basic motion profiles only.

Check it on the PC

The app shows the live picture with tracking boxes, your lines and zones, running counters and a list of recent events. Walk through a line yourself and watch the counter before you rely on the numbers.
