How a speed line works
A speed line is two lines drawn a measured distance apart. The app times each object from the first line to the second and works out its speed. The further apart the lines, the better the estimate.
Speeds are estimates for planning and traffic studies. They are not for enforcement.
Set one up
- 1
Measure the real distance
Pick two marks on the road, such as line markings or poles, and measure between them in metres or feet.
- 2
Draw the speed line in the app
Place the two lines on those marks and enter the distance.
- 3
Keep it inside the frame
Vehicles must be fully detected before they reach the first line, so leave space between it and the picture edge.
- 4
Choose your units
In the portal’s Settings, choose km/h or mph and metres or feet.
Speed reports
The Speed report charts average or maximum speed and can compare periods, such as this week against last. Its speed data table lists each object with its time and speed, can be filtered, and exports to CSV.
Turning counts
Speed lines also count objects that follow a path. At a T-junction with arms A, B and C, draw one speed line per movement (A to B, A to C, B to C, and the reverse where traffic runs both ways). A Trajectory report then shows each movement as its own series.
