How Fast Are They Really Going Past the Gate?
Draw two lines a measured distance apart on a camera view. CrowdSense Desktop times each vehicle between them and the portal works out its speed, automatically, so you can see averages and peaks on the roads around your site.
Everyone Has a View on the Speed. Nobody Has the Numbers.
Shared zones at events, car park aisles, school pick-up roads and the street outside a venue all attract the same complaint: people drive too fast. Without measurements, the argument for a speed hump, a marshal or a road closure is opinion.
Timing vehicles between two lines on a camera gives a consistent estimate of how fast they travel, by hour and by vehicle type, from a camera that may already be there.
What Two Lines Can Tell You
Speed per vehicle
Each vehicle is timed between the two lines and its speed estimated from the distance you measured.
Averages and peaks
Average and highest speeds by hour, day and period, compared side by side.
By type
Speeds for cars, vans, trucks, buses and bikes, reported separately.
Calculated for you
The portal does the arithmetic automatically. No exporting and no spreadsheets.
Counts alongside
The same lines count the vehicles, so speed and volume sit in the same report.
Alerts and webhooks
Send speed events to your own tools over webhooks for screens or follow-up.
Estimate Speeds in Four Steps
- 01
Install on a Windows PC
Download CrowdSense Desktop and install it on a Windows 10, 11 or Server PC on the same network as your cameras, then sign in.
- 02
Add your cameras
Paste in each camera’s RTSP address, find it over ONVIF, or plug in a webcam. Choose the AI vehicles & people profile, which tells a bike from a car, van, truck or bus.
- 03
Draw and measure two lines
Draw two lines across the road in the same direction, and enter the real distance between them, measured on the ground.
- 04
Read the speeds
The portal estimates each vehicle’s speed and charts averages and peaks over time.
Where to Put the Camera
Detection profile: AI vehicles & people. Any IP camera that streams over RTSP works, with ONVIF optional, and so does a USB webcam.
For vehicles, use the AI vehicles & people profile and a camera angle between 20° and 90°: angled or side-on, not straight down.
A vehicle needs to fill at least 4% of the frame’s width seen from the front or back, or 10% seen side-on.
Measure the distance between the two lines on the ground, accurately. The further apart they are, the steadier the estimate.
Both lines must see every vehicle. Place them where vehicles are fully in view and not hidden by parked cars.

Who Uses Speed Estimates
Event and venue operators
Speeds on shared roads, back-of-house routes and car parks where people walk among vehicles.
Councils
Evidence for traffic calming on local streets, collected from existing cameras.
Schools and campuses
Speeds on pick-up roads and internal streets, by time of day.
Property and facility managers
Car park and service road speeds, before and after a change.
Video Stays on Your PC. Only the Numbers Leave.
CrowdSense Desktop analyses the video on the Windows PC it is installed on. What reaches the portal is text: a line was crossed, a zone filled, a queue grew. No video and no images are uploaded, and nothing sent can identify a person.
The software detects people and vehicles so it can count them; it does not identify anyone. No facial recognition, no biometric identification of people. Ever. Your cameras, your recordings and your footage stay on your site, under your control.
Vehicle speed detection, Answered
How accurate is the speed?
It is an estimate. It depends on how accurately the distance between the lines is measured and how cleanly each vehicle is detected at both lines. Use it for trends and planning.
Can it be used to fine drivers?
No. It is not a certified speed measuring device and is not for enforcement. Use it to understand traffic and make the case for changes.
Do I have to calculate anything?
No. Once the two lines and the distance are set, the portal calculates speeds automatically.
Can I see trucks and cars separately?
Yes. The AI vehicles & people profile classes each vehicle as a bike, car, van, truck or bus, so speeds can be compared by type.
